Hostibejk, Natural monument in Kralupy nad Vltavou, Czech Republic
Hostibejk is a natural monument in Kralupy nad Vltavou featuring sandstone cliffs that rise 233 meters above sea level with three distinct geological layers visible in the rock face. The site contains several walking paths that wind through forested areas surrounding the main formation.
The site gained military importance during the Second World War with a concrete anti-aircraft bunker built in 1938 and two brick ammunition storage buildings erected during German occupation. These structures marked the location until the war ended.
The name Hostibejk first appeared in documents from 1670 and may connect to an ancient Slavic legend about a person named Host who owned cattle. This historical naming reflects how the place has tied people to the land for hundreds of years.
The Jarník Staircase with 187 steps leads to the summit and ends at a gazebo with views of Kralupy and České středohoří. The climb is demanding, so visitors should wear sturdy shoes and allow adequate time.
Seven local residents died at this location on May 7, 1945 during German retreat, and their names are commemorated on a stone memorial plaque. This marker honors those who lost their lives in the final days of the war.
