Lázeňská kolonáda, National cultural monument colonnade in Mariánské Lázně, Czech Republic
The Lázeňská kolonáda is a cast iron colonnade that stretches 135 meters and shelters a central walkway beneath wooden coffered ceilings. The walls feature bronze reliefs while overhead frescoes depict astronomical themes.
This structure was designed in 1888 by Vienna-based architects Hans Miksch and Julian Niedzielski. Its iron components were manufactured at the Blansko ironworks in Moravia.
The ceiling paintings display connections between people and the cosmos, while the bronze reliefs along the walls showcase regional artistic traditions that visitors can observe while walking.
The structure offers barrier-free access through a central ramp with accommodations for visitors with mobility needs. The covered walkway provides shelter from weather, making it comfortable to stroll through at any time of year.
During World War II, the structure came close to being dismantled for weapons manufacturing but survived intact. This means its cast iron framework and artistic embellishments from the 1800s remain largely in their original form.
