Kolčavka, Villa in Libeň, Prague 9, Czech Republic

Kolčavka is a large villa or small chateau of tower type in Libeň, standing in the street of the same name on the bank of the Rokytka, south of the railway line from Prague main station to Vysočany. Its grounds were built on the site of an older vineyard homestead, and the original tower was demolished in 2001 and replaced by a new one.

Kolčavka is first mentioned in the 18th century and was built on the site of an older vineyard homestead. From the early 19th century it served as a noble residence and summer house, and in 1853 it was converted into a private boys' agricultural and technical school run by František Čupr until 1872. A cement works opened here in 1881, later followed by small workshops and flats; the original tower was demolished in 2001 and replaced by a new one.

The name Kolčavka is shared by the villa and the street along the Rokytka embankment. A nearby street honours František Čupr, the teacher and philosopher who ran the boys' agricultural and technical school housed here from 1853 to 1872. A private firefighting museum now occupies part of the grounds.

The site has bus routes and train stations nearby for easy access to other parts of the city. A journey to central Prague takes roughly fifteen minutes by public transport.

The original tower was demolished in 2001 and replaced by a completely new tower, so the tower seen today is a recent reconstruction. A private firefighting museum occupies part of the grounds.
