Church of the Ascension of the Lord in Josefov, Empire style church in Josefov, Czech Republic

The Church of the Ascension of the Lord is an Empire-style building in Josefov with a notable tower that stands out in the town's skyline. The structure displays the clean lines and balanced proportions typical of early 19th-century architecture.

Built in Empire style between 1805 and 1810 to designs by Heinrich Hatzinger and Count Julius d'Andreis, the church was consecrated on 8 September 1811. The foundation stone was blessed by Bishop Trauttmansdorff, and the same project was used almost unchanged for the Church of the Resurrection in Terezín. Above the portal, the letters F II MDCCCV honour Emperor Francis II.

The church remains a gathering place for Catholic worship and local celebrations in Josefov today. Visitors passing by will notice people gathering here for services and seasonal religious observances.

The church is located on Masarykovo náměstí and remains open to visitors. Its central position in town makes it easy to reach and explore both the building and its surroundings.

The tower is one of the spots where Vilém z Biely, a captain of the 18th Infantry Regiment and amateur astronomer, may have observed the periodic comet 3D/Biela on 27 February 1826; the sources consider the half-bastion No. XXXVII of the Josefov Crown Walls more likely.
