The fortification stretches across 289 hectares with thick brick walls, multiple bastions, and a network of three-story underground corridors measuring 45 kilometers.
French architect Claude Benoît Duhamel de Querlonde designed this defensive structure between 1780 and 1787 to protect the northern border against Prussian attacks.
The Empire Church, constructed from 1805 to 1810, stands as the main architectural element within the fortress complex.
The fortress offers guided tours through its underground corridors, allowing visitors to discover military engineering techniques from the 18th century.
Each August, the fortress transforms into the venue for Brutal Assault, a major extreme metal music festival drawing participants from across Europe.
