Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a Gothic building in Prostějov with pointed arches and ribbed stone vaults throughout its interior. The crafted details and structural elements create an atmosphere of verticality and height that draws the eye upward.

Founded in 1391 by nobleman Petr of Kravaře, the church was reconstructed after Hussite destruction in 1430, with major restoration work lasting from 1522 to 1588. This extended rebuilding period reflected the region's recovery during a time of religious upheaval.

The interior displays frescoes by Jano Köhler and features a Way of the Cross created by František Bílek. These artworks shape how the space feels when you walk through it.

The church opens regularly for Catholic services and welcomes visitors during these times. It is a good idea to check visiting hours in advance to ensure you can explore the interior comfortably.

A wooden cross survived the devastating fire of 1697, an occurrence locals regarded as miraculous. This survival led to the placement of a special cross on the high altar in 1703, a reminder of that dramatic event.
