Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Gothic church in Prostějov, Czech Republic
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a Gothic structure in Prostějov with a 64.24-metre tower and a single nave with a flat wooden ceiling, rebuilt after a 1697 fire. Its presbytery walls carry frescoes by Jano Köhler, and the high altar holds a miraculous wooden cross.
Founded in 1391 by nobleman Petr of Kravaře, the church was reconstructed after Hussite destruction in 1430, with major restoration work lasting from 1522 to 1588. This extended rebuilding period reflected the region's recovery during a time of religious upheaval.
Each 14 September, the Feast of the Cross brings a traditional city pilgrimage to the church. The wooden cross saved from the 1697 fire stands on the high altar, its beam bearing a gilded plaque with a Latin inscription calling it a beautiful Phoenix.
