Lesní divadlo, Mountain theatre near Liberec, Czech Republic

Lesní divadlo is an open-air theatre in the Jizera Mountains near Liberec that combines wooden structures and stone elements into its design. The stage sits within a natural setting, allowing the surrounding forest and landscape to complement the performances.

The Sloup Theatre Society, founded in 1920, bought land from Count Augustin Kinský and built a stage for 50,000 crowns in 1921. It opened on Pentecost Sunday 1921 with the drama Potopený zvon, performed by Professor Rudolf Ringel. After 1945 performances resumed, and from 1957 to 1959 new benches and entrance gates were added.

Its repertoire has included operas and operettas such as Strauss's Die Fledermaus, Der Freischütz and The Gypsy Baron, and after 1945 Smetana's The Bartered Bride. Fairy tales dominate today's summer season.

The theatre lies in a sandstone valley about 250 metres before the U sedmi trpaslíků pub on the road from Zákupy, just before the descent into Sloup v Čechách. Paths and benches were renewed in 2004–2005, when the seating was reduced to 250 places. Performances resumed in June 2004 and run in the summer season.

The seating slope originally held 2,000 spectators, and passages and cave rooms were cut directly into the sandstone rock around the stage. In August 2013 a performance of "Monology vagíny" drew a record 1,095 visitors, far above the 250 seats installed during the 2004–2005 restoration.
