Krásný Les Castle, cultural monument in Petrovice, Ústí nad Labem District
Krásný Les Castle is a baroque building from the early 18th century in the small town of the same name in the Krušné hory mountain region. The structure has an L-shaped form with multiple floors, rectangular windows evenly spaced, and a steeply pitched roof, with the oldest parts featuring arched ceilings on the ground floor.
The castle was built in the early 1700s by nobleman Ignác Vratislav z Mitrovic and originally served as a governance and defense structure. After changing hands through various noble families, it was later used for farming purposes and gradually declined, especially following World War II.
The name reflects the beautiful landscape of the surrounding mountain region. The area was once a lively place where residents gathered in local centers, shops, and inns that formed the heart of village life.
The site is currently under renovation and not accessible for interior visits, but the exterior can be viewed from the surrounding roads. Visitors can reach the area by local roads by car or on foot and can also enjoy walks in the nearby mountains.
During World War II the castle was used as a camp for French prisoners and later for forced laborers, a dark period in its history that is rarely mentioned. This time leaves traces in local memory and emphasizes the importance of preserving it for future generations.
