Church of Saint James the Greater

The Church of Saint James the Greater is a Romanesque building with solid stone walls and a Baroque tower positioned along the presbytery axis. The structure displays the solid construction methods typical of this period with simple but expressive architectural features.

Monks founded this church between 1148 and 1165, creating one of the oldest Romanesque buildings in the region. Over the centuries the structure underwent changes through Gothic elements in the 13th century and Neo-Gothic modifications in 1875.

The interior contains preserved medieval elements, including a notable tombstone of Ladislav of Sternberg dating from 1566.

The building remains open for religious services and accepts visitors through appointments arranged with the Museum of Saint John of Nepomuk. It helps to contact the museum in advance to plan access and suitable visiting times.
