Church of Saint John the Evangelist, church in Šumperk District of Olomouc region
The Church of Saint John the Evangelist is a religious building in Art Nouveau style built in Šumperk in 1914. The structure features brick construction with white walls, arched windows, and a distinctive bell tower topped with a decorative cupola.
The church was built in 1914 according to plans by Vienna architect Clemens Kattner for the Old Catholic community, whose members had been meeting since 1899. The foundation stone was laid and the first service held in September of the same year, just as World War I was beginning.
The church belongs to the Old Catholic Church, a movement that formed in Šumperk in the late 1800s as people sought a different path from the main Catholic church. Visitors can sense the strong connection between this building and the local community that still gathers here today.
The building is located at Husitská 14 in Šumperk and can be easily found using GPS coordinates. It is surrounded by a stone wall with gates, which provides a peaceful and respectful environment for visitors.
The church was closed for a long time and faced the risk of deterioration, but was later restored and officially designated as a cultural monument in 2007. This rescue effort shows how much the local community values preserving their history.
