Church of Saint Clemens, Roman Catholic church in Levý Hradec, Czech Republic.
The Church of Saint Clement is a church building at Levý Hradec that rises on a hilltop overlooking the Vltava River valley and dominates the former fortified settlement. The structure was built and modified over centuries, with archaeological layers revealing its complex development.
The structure was founded between 882 and 884 when Prince Borivoj I commissioned the first Christian church in the territory after his baptism in Moravia. This foundation marked a turning point in the Christianization of Bohemia.
The church carries the name of Saint Clement and marks a location of profound religious significance for early Bohemian Christianity. Visitors encounter the spiritual continuity that stretches across more than a thousand years at this site.
The site is best reached on foot by a walking path from Roztoky, with a moderate uphill climb taking about 20 to 30 minutes. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be aware that access may be limited during poor weather conditions.
Archaeologists led by Ivan Borkovský uncovered the foundations of the original structure in the 1930s and 1950s, revealing traces of the earliest church building. These findings show that multiple structures were built on top of one another, reflecting continuous use over centuries.
