Church of Saint Michael

The Church of Saint Michael in Horní Litvínov is a Baroque structure from the late 17th century with characteristic features of that style. The building sits in the town center and features a steep facade with carefully crafted decorative details.

The structure was built between 1685 and 1694 according to designs by architect Jean Baptiste Mathey and ranks among the early Baroque buildings of the region. The church was constructed for the then-independent community of Horní Litvínov before the two settlements merged.

The church is named after Archangel Michael and displays Baroque artistic forms that visitors notice upon entering. The interior furnishings reflect craft traditions that have been maintained across the centuries.

The church welcomes visitors during normal opening hours and regular religious services are held there according to Roman Catholic practice. Those interested in the interior decoration should visit in the morning when light streams through the windows.
