Lom Rasová, Natural monument in Komňa, Czech Republic.
Lom Rasová is a protected natural monument in Komňa comprising a flooded sandstone quarry with habitats for amphibians and dragonflies. The site features water surfaces and gentle shorelines where rare species have found refuge.
The site was designated as a protected natural monument by the Czech government in 1982, recognizing its geological and ecological value. It emerged from an abandoned sandstone quarry that gradually transformed into a significant nature conservation area.
The site shelters rare orchid species and bat populations that thrive in this former quarry landscape. Visitors can observe how nature has reclaimed the abandoned extraction area and created a thriving ecosystem.
The site sits about 2.5 kilometers southeast of Komňa village near the Novy Dvůr bus stop and is reachable on foot. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear as paths around the water areas and through the protected zone can be uneven.
The former quarry hosts over 30 water beetle species and around 19 dragonfly species documented by researchers. These aquatic insects thrive in the shallow coves and calm waters of the flooded site.
