Lom Na plachtě, Natural monument in Třebohostice, Czech Republic.
Lom Na plachtě is a protected natural monument in Třebohostice featuring a former granite quarry where seasonal ponds develop during wetter periods. The site encompasses different terrain types, from open water areas to vegetated zones that create varied habitats.
Stone extraction took place at this location until the mid-1960s, when the quarry was abandoned and left to nature. Over the following decades, natural recovery processes gradually transformed the former working site into an important ecological area.
The regional authorities of Central Bohemia established protection measures in 1990 to preserve this wetland habitat for amphibians and reptiles.
The site is accessible via walking paths that lead through different sections of the monument. Be prepared for muddy or wet conditions, especially during or after rainfall, as this enhances the pond formation process.
The site hosts several protected animal species, including fire-bellied toads and common toads that depend on the seasonal ponds for reproduction. These amphibians return annually to breed, sustaining a significant population for the wider region.
