Maria Rast am Stein, Marian pilgrimage site in Vyšší Brod, Czech Republic.
Maria Rast am Stein is a granite chapel complex in Vyšší Brod with multiple religious structures and spaces. The site includes the Chapel of Our Lady of Snow with gallery exhibitions, a separate Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, and various smaller chapels spread across the grounds.
This location began in 1844 when local residents discovered an image of Our Lady of Snow at the site. The discovery led to the development of a pilgrimage destination, with religious structures added over time.
The site draws pilgrims who visit during Marian feasts and celebrations throughout the year. You can see people gathering in prayer groups and leaving small offerings at the chapels, showing how actively this pilgrimage destination is used today.
The site can be reached from Vyšší Brod-klášter railway station via two clearly marked hiking trails. Both routes are well-signposted with the green trail passing through the square and the yellow trail following the Menší Vltavice stream.
The path to the shrine features fourteen Stations of the Cross housed in small stone chapels with cast-iron images. These stations lead down to a Holy Sepulchre chapel impressively built into the rock beneath the main structures above.
