Vodopády svatého Wolfganga, Granite waterfall in Vyssi Brod, Czech Republic.
Vodopády svatého Wolfganga comprises two separate cascades on the Lesser Vltavice River, with the upper waterfall reaching about three meters in height. These falls span roughly eight meters and form a natural feature within a rocky gorge.
The falls took their name from Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg, a bishop who brought Christianity to this region in the 10th century. The area around Vyssi Brod later became an important spiritual center with the establishment of the monastery.
The name honors Saint Wolfgang, a bishop venerated in this region. Visitors can watch water birds such as kingfishers from the wooden footbridge, where they nest among the rocks.
A yellow-marked hiking trail connects Vyssi Brod monastery directly to the waterfalls, requiring roughly a 1.5-kilometer walk from the town center. The paths can become slippery and wet, especially after rain or during damp seasons.
The water is nearly freezing in winter and reaches only about 12 degrees Celsius in summer, supporting rare invertebrate species. These conditions enable specialized organisms to thrive in the moss-covered areas of the riverbed.
