Palác Nisa, Neoclassical building in Liberec, Czech Republic
Palác Nisa is a neoclassical building located on Soukenné náměstí square, featuring a concrete framework and an exterior faced with roughly hewn granite blocks. The structure combines residential apartments on its upper levels with commercial spaces on the ground floor.
Architect Fritz Lehmann designed this structure in 1936 for two insurance companies, Assicurazioni Generali and Moldavia Generali, during a period of industrial growth in Liberec. The project reflected the city's economic development and modernization at that time.
The ground floor served as a gathering space for the city's residents. The Grand Café Generali, with its column-lined hall, functioned as a popular meeting place in the neighborhood.
The building sits in a central location on Soukenné náměstí square, easy to identify by its distinctive granite stone facade. The lower levels are accessible from street level and reveal the site's original commercial purpose.
When completed, it held the title of the city's tallest residential structure, marking a significant milestone for Liberec's development. This distinction made it a landmark of the modern progress the city experienced in the 1930s.
