Kerské rybníčky, Natural monument in Kersko, Czech Republic.
Kerské rybníčky consists of three shallow ponds nestled within a forest zone between Velenka and Třebestovice near Sadská. The protected area spans about 9 hectares across elevations ranging from 192 to 199 meters, with dense vegetation surrounding the water bodies.
The ponds were created through a drainage and water management project of Kersko Forest started by Josef Hyross, replacing an earlier medieval pond that had gradually disappeared. This intervention transformed the landscape into a wetland that would later become protected.
The protected area integrates with the Bohumil Hrabal Nature Trail, established in 2014, featuring 13 information stations throughout Kersko Natural Park.
The site is easily accessible via well-maintained forest trails that wind through the area. Nearby you will find the Saint Joseph Spring, which offers mineral water and works well as a stop during your visit.
The site received Natura 2000 protection status in 2004 because it hosts a notable population of northern crested newts that shelter in these waters during winter. This rare amphibian species makes this location particularly valuable for conservation.
