Mařský vrch, Natural monument and lookout tower in Svatá Maří, Czech Republic
Mařský vrch is a protected natural site crowned by a wooden observation tower that rises above the surrounding forest. The tower provides broad views across the valley and ridgelines typical of this part of the Šumava region.
Construction took place during the 1930s as part of efforts to develop this mountain area for visitors. Religious stations were added to create a walking route linking the tower with the broader site.
The Chapel of St. Wenceslas, consecrated in May 1936, became a central location for religious gatherings and masses in the Šumavsko region.
The walk takes roughly one hour on a clearly marked trail through forest, making it accessible to most visitors. The route climbs steadily but not steeply, with occasional openings that reveal the landscape ahead.
The northern slope displays a remarkable stone field created by frost weathering during ancient ice ages, forming a natural geological display. Few visitors notice this feature while enjoying the tower views, yet it reveals how glacial forces shaped the entire region.
