Meandry Lučiny

Meandry Lučiny is a protected natural area in Havířov where the Lučina River creates winding curves across its landscape, forming steep banks and gravel deposits. This 40-hectare site displays the typical features of an active river system with varied water and bank vegetation.

The area became protected in 1991 when the District Office in Karviná established it as a conservation site for the river and its wildlife. This decision came from growing recognition of the need to preserve natural river landscapes in Czechia.

The area serves as a learning destination where schools and local groups come to study river ecosystems and wetland conservation. Residents often visit to better understand the natural processes that keep the landscape alive.

The area is accessible and offers several spots for observing river life and birds, especially along the water's edge. It is helpful to wear sturdy shoes and bring insect repellent during warm months, as the damp ground attracts mosquitoes.

The river's meanders continuously shift their position and shape, creating new habitats that provide refuge for endangered species like the brook lamprey. This constant movement reveals how alive and dynamic natural systems truly are.
