Medard, Artificial lake in Habartov, Czech Republic
Lake Medard is an artificial water body in Habartov created by flooding a former brown coal open pit. The body of water is quite deep and features various recreational areas distributed along its shoreline.
Brown coal mining at this site stopped in 2000, leaving behind a huge excavated depression. About eight years later, water began filling the depression and transformed it into this body of water.
Five former villages now lie beneath the water - Čistá u Svatavy, Dvory, Kolonie Hahnemannova, Kytlice, and Lísková. These disappeared settlements are woven into the lake's story and remind visitors of the area's past.
You can swim, bike, and do water sports here, as the shore has several dedicated zones for each activity. It is helpful to check in advance which areas are open and where you can best access the activity you want to do.
The lake bottom was carefully prepared and treated during the filling process. This was necessary to ensure water quality and prevent harmful substances left from mining from entering the water.
