Kamenická lípa, Solitary tree in Kamenice nad Lipou Castle Park, Czech Republic.
The Kamenice linden is a large-leaved tree in the castle park that rises to about 10 meters in height. Its hollow trunk is held upright by thick adventitious roots that provide the structural support needed to keep the remaining wood stable.
Planted in the 13th century, the tree was struck by lightning in 1824 and its height was reduced from about 20 meters to its current 10 meters. This dramatic event shaped its appearance permanently and turned it into a testament to natural forces.
The linden tree is so important that the town of Kamenice nad Lipou takes its name from this very tree, with 'nad Lipou' meaning 'above the linden'. The name binds the place permanently to this natural landmark.
The tree is located within the castle park and is easily accessible to visitors exploring the area. Regular maintenance work by specialists takes place every few years to keep the tree healthy and structurally sound.
A descendant of this historic tree was planted on the town's main square in 1919 to honor freedom after World War I. This newer tree stands as a green monument to the hopes of that era.
