Vysočina Bridge, Steel highway bridge in Velké Meziříčí, Czech Republic

The Vysočina Bridge is a steel structure that spans the Oslava River valley and dominates the local landscape. The bridge consists of two parallel decks that curve gently across the terrain, carrying traffic between major cities.

Construction began in 1972 and the bridge opened in 1978, making it a key project during the motorway expansion era. The completion marked an important achievement in Eastern European infrastructure building at that time.

Engineers and architects regularly study the bridge design as an example of 1970s infrastructure development in Eastern European transportation networks.

The bridge functions as part of the D1 motorway connecting Prague to Brno, handling significant daily traffic flow. You can view the structure from the valley below or from adjacent roads if you want to see it up close.

The structure incorporates roughly 6,000 tons of steel and features a distinctive double-deck design that sets it apart from similar bridges of its era. This material-intensive approach allowed the bridge to handle the long span across the valley efficiently.
