Velké Meziříčí, town in the Czech Republic

Velké Meziříčí is a small town in the Czech Republic situated where the Oslava and Balinka rivers converge on a hilltop overlooking the waterways. The old town features narrow winding streets, a central square with Renaissance facades, a Gothic church with a tall tower dating to the 1300s, remains of medieval fortification walls, and various houses displaying decorative stonework and period architectural details from across several centuries.

Settlement began in the 12th and 13th centuries when people arrived to settle the Oslava River valley and built an early castle on a rocky outcrop, with the town first recorded in writing in 1281. In the 14th century, wooden fortifications were replaced with stone walls and the Church of Saint Nicholas was constructed, while the town suffered significant damage during the Thirty Years War and later hosted a Jewish community from the 17th century onward.

The town's name derives from the Oslava River and its central position between neighboring areas, reflected in the Czech name meaning 'big middle river valley'. Walking through today, you see traditional Czech stone buildings and narrow lanes that still serve as gathering places, with the main square remaining the heart where locals and visitors meet.

The main exploration area is the central old town with its narrow lanes and the church tower which visitors can climb for views over the surrounding countryside. Plan time to visit the Jewish quarter including the two synagogues and cemetery, walk sections of the remaining medieval walls, and examine the decorative stonework on the older houses throughout the town center.

An overlooked detail is a bloodstained cloth preserved in a local museum from 1914 when Count Harrach, a friend of the heir to the Austrian throne, tried to protect him during the assassination in Sarajevo. This artifact connects the town to a pivotal moment in European history through the personal connection of one of its residents.
