Polické stěny, Nature reserve in Božanov, Czech Republic
Polické stěny is a nature reserve featuring sandstone formations, deep gorges, and forested plateaus in northeastern Bohemia. The landscape includes dramatic rocky outcrops interspersed with dense forest vegetation across several kilometers.
The reserve became a separate protected area in 2009 after being separated from the larger Broumovské stěny National Nature Reserve. This division allowed for targeted management of its distinct geological characteristics.
Local communities maintain a network of marked hiking paths through the reserve, connecting various geological formations and observation points.
Multiple entry points give access to the reserve with parking areas and information boards at main trailheads throughout the site. Sturdy footwear is recommended as paths traverse uneven terrain with steep sections.
Kovářova Gorge contains two accessible pseudokarst caves created through natural erosion of the sandstone over time. These formations developed without the limestone dissolution of typical karst systems, showing a rare geological formation process.
