Ratajské rybníky, Natural monument in Hlinsko, Czech Republic.
Ratajské rybníky is a protected natural area comprising three ponds arranged in a cascade near Hlinsko. The ponds are surrounded by peat meadows and wetland vegetation that support the aquatic ecosystem.
The ponds were built in stages over more than a century, with the upper pond dating to 1855 and the lower to 1910. The middle pond was added much later in 1970 as the system expanded.
Local fishermen still work these ponds following seasonal patterns passed down through generations. The autumn harvests remain an important part of the community's connection to the water.
The ponds are easily accessible on foot from nearby areas around Hlinsko. Spring and autumn offer the best conditions for walking and observing wildlife, with pleasant temperatures and active vegetation.
The ponds harbor rare butterfly species that are difficult to spot elsewhere in the region. Species like the Scarce Large Blue demonstrate why this small area has been given protected status.
