Písečný přesyp u Píst, Natural monument near Písty, Czech Republic
Písečný přesyp u Píst is a protected area featuring sand dunes formed by deposits from the Elbe River along its left bank. The 3.7-hectare (9-acre) site displays how river activity over time has shaped the land.
The site gained protection status as a natural monument in 1951 and was later recognized as a Special Area of Conservation in 2012. These designations reflect growing recognition of its ecological importance.
The site shelters plants that thrive in sandy soils and are uncommon elsewhere in the region. These adapted species show how life finds ways in harsh conditions.
Visitors can reach the site through marked hiking trails, with free parking available about 30 meters from the entrance. It is wise to wear sturdy footwear as the sandy ground can be uneven and slippery.
The area supports heat-loving spiders and invertebrates that depend on open sandy substrates to survive. These organisms are found nowhere else in the region and are tied to the specific conditions the dunes provide.
