Starkočský lom, Natural monument in Starkoč, Czech Republic.
Starkočský lom is a protected natural site near Starkoč featuring exposed rock walls and geological layers that reveal fossils from different geological periods. The cliff faces allow visitors to observe the natural layers and structures that developed over millions of years.
The site functioned as a quarry for road construction materials until operations stopped in the 1930s. After closure, the excavated area gradually filled with water and transformed its appearance completely.
The site contains numerous fossils, including the coral Isis miranda and the sponge Gribrospondia, which are not found elsewhere in the Czech Republic.
The site is compact and easy to walk through, allowing visitors to explore the rock walls and geological structures up close. The surroundings remain in their natural state and require sturdy footwear plus caution near the edges.
The area contains rare red garnets with purple or brown tints found at few other locations in the region. These minerals are typically marked by cracks and therefore unsuitable for jewelry making.
