Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Gothic church in Starkoč, Czech Republic.
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Starkoč is a three-aisle religious structure built in Romanesque style, with a Gothic transept added between 1258 and 1263. Inside, the church contains altars, decorative elements, and wall paintings that reflect different artistic periods of the building.
Construction started during the reign of Bohemian King Ottokar I from 1198 to 1230, giving the church early importance in the region. The Gothic transept added shortly after shows how architectural styles were evolving during that era.
The main altar crafted by Josef Lauermann in 1769 displays detailed stonework and statues by Ignác Platzer, showing Czech religious artistry of that era. These works reflect the artistic skill that went into creating sacred spaces during the 18th century.
The building has been under restoration since April 2019, with work focused on preserving its structure and historical details. Visitors should expect that certain areas may not be fully accessible during this time.
The side walls display frescoes showing scenes from Saint Norbert's life, painted in 1743 by Silesian artist Vilém Neuenherz. These paintings remain visible today and represent regional artistic traditions from that time.
