Staré Hradisko

Staré Hradisko is a Celtic fortified settlement situated on a ridge above the Hloučela stream, enclosed by substantial defensive walls. The site contains ruins of buildings, workshops, and gateway structures that remain visible across its expanse.

The settlement was founded around the middle of the 2nd century BC and thrived as a crucial hub on trade routes connecting distant regions. It was abandoned roughly in the middle of the 1st century BC as commerce patterns shifted.

The site reveals how a thriving trading community organized itself, with craftspeople and merchants living and working in close proximity. The spatial layout shows how different areas were dedicated to specific activities, offering insight into daily life in this ancient settlement.

The site is best explored on foot, with paths leading across the grounds to view the remains from different angles. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for walking the paths and observing the earthworks clearly.

Archaeological finds reveal that residents maintained trading connections across a vast distance, from coastal Atlantic communities to Mediterranean cultures. The abundance of imported objects suggests this place served as a crossroads for goods and ideas spanning the known world.
