Saint Peter of Alcantara Church in Karviná-Doly

Saint Peter of Alcantara Church is a Baroque building with a single nave, an altar from its original construction period, and a medieval stone baptistery positioned in one corner. The interior displays the modest furnishings and architectural details typical of 18th-century religious buildings in this region.

The building was constructed in 1736 by nobleman František Wilhelm Larisch as a replacement for a wooden chapel dedicated to Saint Martin that dated to 1447. This new church marked the shift from a temporary wooden structure to a permanent Baroque building.

The church remains a place of worship for both Czech and Polish-speaking residents who gather here for religious services and celebrations. It continues to hold meaning as a community spiritual center that connects people through shared faith.

Visitors can enter the church free of charge on summer weekends, where local volunteers offer guidance about its structure and features. It is wise to check ahead about specific opening times since access may vary depending on religious services and the season.

The church has tilted about 7 degrees toward the south because of coal mining beneath it, with the ground having sunk about 37 meters from its original height. Despite this dramatic shift, the building remains standing and continues to serve its community.
