Capuchin monastery, Baroque monastery in Brno, Czech Republic
The Capuchin monastery is a Baroque structure with a church featuring a single nave, straight chancel, and two side chapels. One chapel honors Saint Francis while the other honors Saint Fidelius.
Cardinal Dietrichstein invited the Capuchin order to Brno in 1604, which led to the construction of the first monastery near the Menínská Gate. The community became established at this central location for centuries to come.
The library contains a ceiling fresco showing John Bonaventura in conversation with Thomas Aquinas. These artistic elements reflect the theological role this place held for the order.
The monastery sits at Kapucínské náměstí 303/5 in central Brno, within walking distance of the main railway station and various public transit lines. Its central location makes visiting convenient during city exploration.
The underground crypt holds naturally preserved mummified remains of monks and Baron Trenck. A special ventilation system running through the church pillars kept these remains intact over the centuries.
