Capuchin Crypt in Brno

The Capuchin Crypt in Brno is an underground burial chamber beneath the church where naturally mummified remains of friars are arranged in rows. They wear their traditional robes and hold religious objects, positioned beneath the church floor.

The crypt served as a final resting place from the 1650s to the late 1700s for members of the order and supporters of the Capuchins. More than one hundred and fifty were buried there during this period.

The inscriptions on the walls speak to visitors in Czech about mortality and reflect an old tradition of remembering death through the preserved remains.

The site is open on weekdays and weekends with adjusted hours at different times of the year. Check ahead for current visiting times before planning your visit.

The location has a sophisticated ventilation system and special soil composition that allowed natural mummification to occur. This rare combination has preserved about two dozen monks in their original positions over the centuries.
