Mníšek pod Brdy, Neoclassical château in Mníšek pod Brdy, Czech Republic

Mníšek pod Brdy is a château built on the site of a smaller royal castle, with a four-sided layout and neoclassical features. The medieval fortified area was smaller than today's building, and a tower documented in written sources was demolished in 1425. A large park with a pond surrounds the building.

First mentioned in 1355 in Charles IV's Majestas Carolina, the castle dates archaeologically to the late 13th or early 14th century. Swedish troops under General Banér plundered it in 1639; in 1655 the adventurer Servác Engel of Engelsfluss bought the ruin and rebuilt it in 1656–1672 as a baroque aristocratic residence. After a fire in 1848 Theodorich Kast reconstructed it in 1910–1911; confiscated in 1945, it passed to the National Heritage Institute in 2000 and reopened in 2006 after a reconstruction costing over 100 million crowns.

The château's name derives from the town Mníšek pod Brdy, and the building is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Visitors can climb the clock tower's attic lookout, opened in 2018, which offers a view over the Bojovský potok basin and the town square and shows part of the clock mechanism. The grounds also appear in the 2022 film Tajemství staré bambitky 2, directed by Ivo Machráček.

The château is state-owned and administered by the National Heritage Institute, and the grounds opened to the public in 2006 after a reconstruction costing over 100 million crowns. A marked trail, the Mníšek pod Brdy educational path, runs around the building. Since 2018 the tower attic has held a lookout with views over the Bojovský potok basin and the square, plus part of the clock mechanism.

Servác Engel of Engelsfluss, a wealthy adventurer, bought the run-down estate from the Mitrovice family in 1655 and rebuilt it between 1656 and 1672, turning a Baroque fortress into an aristocratic residence. The castle later served the Ministry of the Interior as a store for politically sensitive archives until 2000.
