Manětín Dark Sky Park, Dark sky preserve in Manětín, Czech Republic.
Manětín Dark Sky Park is a protected area in the Plzeň Region spanning rolling terrain across multiple elevations between 350 and 825 meters. The designated zone was created specifically to enable nighttime sky observation without interference from artificial lighting.
The area was established in 2014 by the Czech Astronomical Society to fight rising light pollution in the region. The protected designation aimed to preserve dark sky conditions for future observation and research.
Local astronomers organize regular nighttime observation sessions, teaching visitors about constellations and celestial phenomena throughout the year.
Bring warm clothing, a red-filtered flashlight, and patience since the best observations occur after midnight. Access to viewing areas varies by season and weather conditions.
On clear nights, observers can see more than 1000 stars and the milky band of our galaxy with the naked eye. This visibility is exceptional for central Europe, where most people live under light-polluted skies.
