Chapel of Corpus Christi, Baroque chapel in Olomouc, Czech Republic
The Chapel of Corpus Christi is a Baroque structure in Olomouc featuring an oval ground plan with a high altar framed by pillars and pilasters. The interior combines elements drawn from Roman church architecture with this innovative rounded design.
The structure was rebuilt between 1721 and 1724 as a Baroque replacement of an earlier Gothic building and formed part of a new convent next to an older Jesuit establishment. This rebuilding coincided with the Baroque transformation of Olomouc and its religious institutions.
The ceiling paintings by Jan Kryštof Handke depict religious scenes interwoven with local historical events. These artworks shape the visual character of the interior space visitors experience today.
The chapel is located within the UP Art Centre and regularly hosts concerts, conferences, and cultural events. Visitors should check current event schedules to access the interior of this active venue.
The oval ground plan was deliberately designed to mirror the shape of a Eucharistic host, directly linking the architecture to the chapel's religious dedication. This symbolic connection between form and purpose is uncommon in Baroque architecture.
