Potštejn

Potštejn is a Gothic castle ruin located on a hilltop in Eastern Bohemia. The preserved fortifications, gateways, walls, and a chapel from the medieval period form the core structure of the site.

The castle was founded in the 13th century and was captured in 1339 by Charles IV before he became King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor. This event changed the course of the site's history.

The ruins became a source of local legends about hidden treasures that inspired writers and storytellers over the centuries. These tales show how the place captured people's imagination and became part of regional folklore.

The site is best explored on foot as the paths on the grounds are narrow and sometimes steep. Good footwear and care are recommended, especially during wet weather.

An exhibition in one of the entrance gates documents the historical importance of the site and offers visitors insight into its architectural development. This small display helps explain the role the place played in the region.
