Úpravna vody Podhradí, Water treatment facility in Podhradí, Czech Republic
Úpravna vody Podhradí is a water treatment facility with two symmetrical processing lines containing about 26 filtration units. The plant uses sand filters and chemicals such as aluminum sulfate, chlorine dioxide, and potassium permanganate for water purification.
The facility was built following a government decision in 1954 to create a water system from Kružberk dam and became operational by the end of 1958. The project represented a major infrastructure development of that era.
The building displays a large relief titled "Water in Our Life" created by artist Vincenc Makovský in the early 1960s. This artwork shapes the site's appearance and reflects society's dependence on clean water.
The site is best reached on foot or by car since it is located in an industrial area outside the city center. For larger groups, advance notification is recommended to arrange a visit to the facility.
The structure was designed as a symbol of post-war infrastructure development and stands out for its functionalist architecture. This design makes it a notable example of both technical and aesthetic ideals of that period.
