Church of Saint Lawrence, Baroque church in Rumburk, Czech Republic

The Church of Saint Lawrence is a Baroque church in Rumburk, a town near the German border in the Ústí nad Labem Region of the Czech Republic. It stands next to a former Capuchin monastery, and the whole complex shows the heavy stone walls, tall nave, and simpler decorative lines typical of early Baroque religious buildings in this part of Bohemia.

The church was built between 1683 and 1685 as part of a Capuchin monastery, following a will from 1662 that required the estate owner's heir to fund such a foundation. It was consecrated in 1690, and the Capuchins stayed until their monastery was forcibly closed in 1950, after which the church passed through several denominations before returning to Catholic use in 1957.

The church is dedicated to Lawrence of Rome, whose martyrdom is depicted on the 18th-century main altar, alongside scenes of John the Baptist and Wenceslaus. Since 1994 the former Capuchin monastery has housed the town library, so visitors pass through spaces once used by monks.

The church is easy to find on Třída 9. května, right next to the building that now houses the Rumburk City Library, so you can visit both in one stop. Walking around the outside gives the clearest view of the old monastery walls and the south side of the building, and the immediate area is flat and simple to move through on foot.

The original plan came from a will that ordered an altarpiece for the monastery church to be bought in Spain, a detail that set this modest Bohemian foundation apart from the start. Today, the most unexpected sight is not inside the church but next door, where the old monastery halls serve as the town's public library, so readers sit where monks once walked.
