Zruč nad Sázavou Castle

Zruč nad Sázavou Castle is a château featuring Gothic Revival architecture situated along the Sázava River in east-central Bohemia. The building is characterized by distinctive bastions and exhibition spaces in its southern section.

The castle originated as a Gothic structure and underwent complete reconstruction from 1892 to 1894 after 18th century fires caused extensive damage. This rebuilding combined remaining medieval elements with new Gothic Revival design.

The castle serves the town as a town hall and art gallery, where exhibitions showcase regional heritage and local artistic traditions. The accessible southern wing displays works connected to the area's creative community and past.

The castle is accessible from the southern bank of the Sázava River and offers guided tours through various exhibition areas. Visitors should plan for some rooms being available only with group tours or at scheduled times.

The castle was rebuilt after a devastating 1781 fire with a remarkable architectural transformation that combined original Gothic roots with new Gothic Revival elements. This juxtaposition of old and new makes the building an unusual example of 19th century architectural evolution.
