Church of Saint Giles in Domanín, Gothic church in Domanín, Czech Republic

The Church of Saint Giles is a single-nave, oriented Renaissance building retaining Gothic elements, standing in a walled cemetery near the south shore of Třeboň's Svět pond in Domanín. Its oldest part is the lower masonry of the five-sided presbytery; presbytery and nave carry ribless cross vaults, pointed windows, and traces of sgraffito and rustication. A tower with a Baroque onion dome was added on the west side in 1776.

The church is first documented in 1515. Vilém of Rožmberk (1535–1592) had it enlarged and rebuilt in 1574–1576 by master builder Jan Vlach, and it was consecrated on 26 July 1576. In 1776 a west tower with a Baroque onion dome was added under Josef I. Adam of Schwarzenberg. From 1784 the crypt served as the Schwarzenberg family burial place until the coffins were moved to the new Schwarzenberg tomb in 1877.

The church is the site of the Schwarzenberg family crypt, used from 1784 to 1877 before the coffins were moved to the new Schwarzenberg tomb east of the church. The traveller Jiří Hanzelka (1920–2003) is buried in the north-eastern part of the cemetery. A 16th-century votive painting of Vilém of Rožmberk and his first two wives hangs in the presbytery.

The church stands on the cemetery by the southern shore of Třeboň's Svět pond in Domanín, reached on foot from the village. The cemetery is enclosed by a stone wall; the traveller Jiří Hanzelka (1920–2003) is buried in its north-eastern corner. The Schwarzenberg tomb lies east of the church in the park.

The crypt beneath the church held the coffins of the Schwarzenberg primogeniture from 1786 to 1858, with burials in the churchyard continuing until 1873. In 1877 the coffins were ceremonially moved to the new Schwarzenberg tomb east of the church, leaving the crypt empty. Look for the Renaissance votive painting of Vilém of Rožmberk with his first two wives, Kateřina Brunšvická and Žofie Hohenzollernská, from around 1576.
