Vila Vladislava Vančury, Cultural monument villa in Zbraslav, Czech Republic
The Vila Vladislava Vančury is a two-story villa in Zbraslav with a flat roof and horizontal strip windows, positioned on sloping terrain above the settlement. The building combines simple geometric forms with surrounding gardens and features separate entrances for the medical practice and residential spaces.
Architect Jaromir Krejcar designed and built the villa between 1926 and 1929 in a modern style that combined functional spaces with the residents' daily needs. The building reflects early modern architectural trends and served as home to the Vančura family until 1942.
The house served as home and workplace for writer Vladislav Vančura, who used the upper floor for his creative writing. His wife Ludmila practiced medicine on the ground floor, making the building a shared space where two professional worlds coexisted.
The garden surrounding the villa is arranged in terraces with ramps and staircases connecting the different levels because of the sloping ground. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the paths between levels and to the garden house in the southeast can be quite steep.
The villa features a circular swimming pool set within the terraced gardens, which was unusual for a private residence in the 1920s. This detail reveals how modern and affluent the household was at the time and highlights the importance placed on leisure in the family's daily life.
