Vila Waldstein

Vila Waldstein is a residential house built in the classical style on a hilltop overlooking the left bank of the Elbe River in the Horní Žleb area. The two-story building features traditional 19th-century architectural details and sits on grounds that once belonged to a spa complex.

Architect Josef Mocker designed the house between 1870 and 1871 for a member of the Waldstein-Wartenberg family. It was originally connected to a thermal spa facility before later becoming a private residence for other families.

The villa reflects the residential tastes and architectural preferences of the Bohemian aristocracy in the 1800s. Walking around it, you can see how wealthy families of that era chose to build their homes in this riverside area.

The building sits on a slope above the river and is best reached on foot from the nearby U přejezdu bus stop. The area has uneven ground and no flat paths, so wear sturdy shoes and allow extra time for the climb.

This was architect Josef Mocker's first independent project, marking the start of a career that would later shape much of the region's architectural style. Few visitors realize how important this building is in understanding the development of architecture in Bohemia.
