Pluhův Žďár Chateau

Pluhův Žďár Chateau is a fortified residence with medieval origins that blends Gothic core structures with Baroque farm buildings scattered across its grounds. The layout reveals different construction periods, from thick stone walls to later additions that expanded the complex.

The site originated in 1252 as a Cistercian monastery founded by a Znojmo nobleman. A major fire in the late 1600s destroyed portions of the structure, prompting extensive reconstruction that shaped its current appearance.

The name comes from the forest that once covered this area. Visitors today experience exhibitions that show how local architecture and daily life developed over centuries.

The chateau can be explored through guided multimedia presentations and self-directed audio tours along various themed pathways. Routes are clearly marked, allowing visitors to move at their own pace while learning about the building's different wings and their purposes.

During reconstruction, architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel left his mark on the building by mixing his signature Baroque-influenced style with the existing medieval foundations. His work shaped how the different periods of construction relate to one another visually.
