Petr, Cultural monument in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic

Petr is a two-storey Baroque terraced house on Vřídelní Street, opposite the Mlýnská colonnade. Its ground floor is masonry, while the upper floors are timber-framed and overhang, under a tall shingled saddle roof with dormers. The facade carries a replica of the 1923 illusion half-timbering, and the central dormer has two rectangular windows with a round window above them.

A Baroque half-timbered townhouse was built in 1706–1709 just outside the city gate in what is now Vřídelní Street; its timber was dendrochronologically dated to those years. From 1750 it served as the pub U zlatého vola under Kašpar Penkert. In 1896 Amelie and Ernest Charwat had it extended into the courtyard, and in 1922–1923 Heinrich Johann Vieth rebuilt it for the Neubauer family, adding the illusory half-timbering of the facade. Protected as a cultural monument since 27 May 1991, it was fully reconstructed in 1999–2000 and reopened on 13 September 2000.

The name Petr is a Czech adaptation of Petter, the surname of tenant Johann Petter, who modernized the house in 1923. After the German population was expelled after World War II, the house was renamed Petr during the so-called national cleansing. The name also evokes Russian Tsar Peter the Great, who took cures in Karlovy Vary twice and once helped masons build the House at the Peacock opposite; a bronze plaque at the entrance recalls this.

The building sits in the central area of Karlovy Vary and is easy to reach from the main promenade along the Tepla River. The surrounding area offers plenty of space for strolling and exploring the adjacent streets and pathways.

A bronze plaque by the entrance recalls that Peter the Great, who took cures in Karlovy Vary twice, once helped masons building the house U Páva that stood opposite today's hotel Petr. The house was later demolished, and the plaque keeps the story alive.
