Klášter Castle, Medieval château in Klášter, Czech Republic
Klášter Castle is a château in the Czech Republic that combines early Baroque elements with monastic buildings in one stone complex. Inside, you'll find decorated halls and spacious courtyards enclosed within thick walls.
Prince Vladislav II founded this Cistercian monastery in 1144 as a religious community. After the Hussite Wars in the 1400s, the monastic complex was transformed into a château.
The monastery buildings display artworks by Jakub Antonín Pink and Matyáš Bernard Braun, showing different periods of Czech artistic development. You can still see how these artists shaped the appearance of the rooms and decorated the spaces you walk through.
The National Heritage Institute manages access to the complex and offers guided tours through the halls and exhibitions about monastic life. Before visiting, check opening times as seasonal closures and special arrangements may apply.
The monastery supported itself economically through an extensive network of farmsteads scattered across the surrounding lands, which organized agricultural production and shaped local prosperity. These properties continued to operate until the monastery's dissolution in 1785 put an end to the system.
