Dominican monastery, Dominican religious community in Brno-město, Czech Republic.

The Dominican monastery stands on Dominikánská Street beside the Church of St. Michael and the New Town Hall. Its western cloister wing, built in the 1240s and vaulted around 1300, keeps its outer walls and the side pillars of the original triple windows with semicircular arches. The chapter house, reached through a large pointed portal, was vaulted in 1302.

The Dominicans arrived in Brno probably between 1228 and 1239, and the monastery's founding by Margrave Přemysl is dated to the same period. A margrave's charter of 1247 records an oratory at the church, and one of 1248 mentions the newly founded monastery. A provincial court is first documented here in 1297, and assemblies and courts met regularly from 1348.

The monastery's chapter house, reached from the north cloister arm through a large pointed portal flanked by two windows, was vaulted in 1302. From 1582 to 1583 a court of the estates was built above the northern cloister arm, and by 1586 the Provincial House area was defined by an arcade open to the courtyard.

The building now serves in part as a municipal office but remains open to visitors. Allow time to explore the cloisters and courtyards to appreciate the medieval layout fully.

The western cloister wing keeps its 13th-century outer walls and the side pillars of the original triple windows, whose middle sections were later removed. The round shafts end in capitals, round below and square above, carved with palmettes and leafy tendrils. Cylindrical responds for a planned vault also survive; the present vaulting is later.
