Knížecí dům, Renaissance house at Velké náměstí, Prachatice, Czech Republic
The Knížecí dům is a two-story corner building with elaborate sgraffito decorations on its western facade depicting biblical and allegorical scenes. It connects to the adjacent Národní dům through internal passages, allowing visitors to explore both historical structures.
The building was originally constructed in Gothic style but underwent Renaissance reconstruction in 1572. By the 18th century, it served as a residence for Prachatice estate officials.
The western wall displays Renaissance sgraffito showing biblical scenes and German inscriptions inspired by works of woodcut artist Erhard Schoen. This decoration reflects the artistic tastes of wealthy merchants who lived in Prachatice at that time.
Visitors should pay attention to the western facade to fully appreciate the elaborate sgraffito decorations, especially in daylight. Access through connected interior passages allows exploration of both adjacent historical buildings in a single visit.
The sgraffito decorations include a satirical scene showing a devil recording gossip from neighbors on donkey skin. This humorous depiction draws from medieval moral teachings known to local residents.
