Church of Saint John of Nepomuk, Neo-Romanesque church in České Budějovice, Czech Republic

The Church of Saint John of Nepomuk is a Roman Catholic church on Linecké předměstí, built in 1914–15 to a design by the Varnsdorf architect Anton Möller. It is Neo-Romanesque, with a semicircular apse carrying Beuron-style elements. The main altar holds Franz Anton Maulbertsch's Baroque painting Apotheosis of Saint John of Nepomuk, moved here from Saint Nicholas Cathedral.

Construction began in 1914 to a design by the Varnsdorf architect Anton Möller, after Bishop Hůlka redirected a fund raised since the late 19th century under Bishop Martin Říha for a new cathedral into repairs of St Nicholas Cathedral in 1912 and a new church on the Linecké předměstí. War shortages of material and labour slowed the work, and the church was consecrated on 12 September 1915.

The church is named after John of Nepomuk, whose Baroque apotheosis painting by Franz Anton Maulbertsch hangs on the main altar, moved here from Saint Nicholas Cathedral. The organ case by Pantaleon Major, with gilded kneeling angels playing a harp and Latin psalm inscriptions, is described as unparalleled in the Czech Republic.

The church stands in the Linecké předměstí district, in České Budějovice 7. The organ, completed in 1916, is the largest instrument in the city and the district, with three manuals and 49 registers; a notice in the tower base gives 32 registers and almost 4,000 pipes. Look up at the organ case by Pantaleon Major, with gilded figures and Latin psalm inscriptions.

The organ case, designed by Pantaleon Major and built by Bohumil Murdoch's firm, is a single Art Nouveau structure with Beuron-style elements, divided into three fields by three pairs of cherubs on vertical strips. Latin verses of Psalm 95 are inscribed on the horizontal beams, and gilded kneeling angels playing a harp crown the central arch. This design is described as unparalleled in the Czech Republic.
