Museum of horse railway in České Budějovice

The Museum of Horse Railway displays exhibits documenting how horse-drawn trains developed and operated from their earliest conception through active service. The building itself served as a guard station on the original line and contains tickets, uniforms, and equipment from that period.

The horse railway between this city and Linz was established in 1825 as one of the longest continental rail routes of its time. It was later extended further into Austria and represented a major transition from animal-powered to mechanized transport.

The name reflects the horses that pulled trains along the tracks, marking an era when animal power drove what people considered modern technology. Visitors can see the simple tools and personal belongings that workers used in their daily routines.

The museum occupies a former guard station on Mánesova Street and is easy to reach on foot from the city center. The interior is modest in size and focused, so plan for an hour or so to comfortably view everything.

The guard station is the sole original building that survives from the entire horse railway line and remains in its original location. This makes it a rare window into the actual 19th century reality of this place.
